Biography

Arild N. Nystad (Dr.Techn/Ph.D.) has 40 years of experience from the petroleum sector in Norway and internationally and working as advisor since 2001.

Petroleum Resource Management: Nystad has a broad experience from the Management of the Petroleum Sector in the capacity of Director of Petroleum Resource Management Division at the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (www.npd.no/en/) advising the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MPE) on all O&G matters, Manager of the Establishment Team of Petoro AS (www.petoro.no/home) (the State’s Direct Financial Interests in Petroleum Fields) (2001) and advisor (2001-2003), and Board Member of Gassco AS (www.gassco.no/en/) (the State’s Operating Company of Gas Pipelines to Europe) (2005-2007). At NPD Nystad had responsibility for advising the Ministry on the Concession Rounds and about 40 Plans for Developments and Operations (PDO) in the period 1985-1997. He holds a Ph.D. on “Petroleum Reservoir Management: Reservoir Economics and Optimization” from NTNU and has an internationally recognized expertise on petroleum taxation, including incentives and distribution in fiscal and contractual regimes. He developed the concept of Reservoir Economics and published extensively in refereed journals on petroleum resource management and petroleum taxation.

International: Nystad has an extensive international experience from several projects and seminars in petroleum producing countries on Petroleum Resource Management, Governance of the Petroleum Sector and Integrated Operations and Smart Fields (Brazil, Mexico, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Malaysia, Thailand, India). Nystad served as member of Advisory Group Energy (AGE) for the European Commission advising on the 7th frame program on R&D (2006-2008). Nystad was board member (1994-2003) and president (2001) of the International Association of Energy Economics (IAEE) (www.iaee.org)

R&D and Innovation: Nystad has 25 years’ experience: Chief Scientist at Centre of Petroleum Economic Studies (CMI), developing Reservoir Economics & Fiscal Optimization (1981-1985) (ref: PhD). Coordinator/Editor of the R&D Strategy in O&G for NTNU in 2005 (BRU2005), member Management Team of “Center for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry” at NTNU (2007-2014), Conference Chair “Annual International Conference on Integrated Operations” (2007-2014), member Management Team “Drilling and Well Center for Improved Recovery” (www.drillwell.no) (2011-2015). Coordinator of BRU21 NTNU Strategy for O&G (2016-2017): NTNU Strategy for Oil and Gas (Coordinator & Editor: Arild N. Nystad). Advisor and Concept Developer for BRU21 Digital and Automation Solutions for O&G (2017-2020).
